On Monday, October 20th, JITOA members and tourism professionals embarked on a memorable Familiarization (FAM) Trip to two of Jordan’s cultural treasures: Um Al-Rasas and Madaba.

The day began at Um Al-Rasas, an exceptional archaeological site featuring early Christian ruins and remarkably preserved mosaic floors. Participants were accompanied by Mr. Emad Al Rawahneh, Director of Tourism – Greater Amman Area, who shared expert guidance and fascinating historical insights throughout the tour, providing a deeper understanding of the site’s significance in Jordan’s rich heritage.

Next, the group headed to Madaba, famously known as the “City of Mosaics.” At the Madaba Visitor Center, Ms. Alia Masarweh, the center’s manager, offered a full description of the city’s history along with a short presentation video.

Participants also visited the Madaba Mosaic College, where they admired centuries-old mosaics and had the unique opportunity to create their own small mosaic pieces, putting into practice the techniques and materials demonstrated by the local artisans.

Following this hands-on experience, participants explored the Madaba Archaeological Park, including the Virgin’s Church and Eliano’s Cellar, with a guided tour that revealed the historical and cultural significance of these remarkable sites.

A highlight of the trip was St. George’s Church, marking the first visit JITOA arranged after its recent renovation. Participants received a detailed briefing on the church’s history and the importance of its stunning mosaic floors, deepening their appreciation of its cultural and religious value

The day concluded with a delightful traditional lunch at Hikayet Sitti – Food Basket, a family-owned restaurant housed in a beautifully restored 110-year-old home in the heart of Madaba. Led by Chef Feryal Karadsheh, the restaurant offers authentic, different kinds of Jordanian dishes in a warm, homely atmosphere. Guests were welcomed by Firyal and Elias, whose generous hospitality added a personal touch to the experience, highlighting the rich culinary traditions of the region.
