On October, 5th, 2016, The Jordan Inbound Tour Operators Association (JITOA) held the 5th of its “Power Breakfast" events, under the Patronage of H.E. Ms. Lina Annab and the Ambassador of Mexico H.E. Enrique Rojo Stein were the guest speakers for the Power Breakfast which was under the theme "Exploring New Markets & Opportunities for Jordan". This series of events came as a response to the continuously declining situation in the tourism sector. At this time the sector can no longer rely on the traditional markets in Europe and the US, so it is imperative to explore new opportunities for Jordan and link to new emerging markets that have a propensity for travel, with an effort to position Jordan well and grasp the opportunity early on.
The event, which explored new opportunities for Jordan within the Mexican outbound tourism market, was primarily attended by active and associate members of the association including tour operators, hotels, transportation companies, and tourism investment companies. In addition to a number of VIP guests from Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Jordan Tourism Board, the Baptism Site Commission, tourism associations, banks, airlines, USAID among others.
“Outbound spending in Mexico has recorded impressive growth in the last few years, with total expenditure increasing from US$ 10.2 billion in 2010 to US $12.9 billion in 2014. Growth was particularly strong in 2013 (12%) despite a slowdown in the number of trips. This can be attributed to a sudden surge in average spending per trip as a result of an appreciation in the Peso, which encouraged Mexicans to spend more. Strong growth is projected to continue over the next few years with total outbound spending expected to exceed US$16 billion by 2019 according to Canadean research agency", pointed out Ms. Ghada Al Najjar - JITOA Chairman.
More and more Mexican tourists are traveling abroad and even with the regions unrest, Mexican outbound travel to Middle East is estimated to increase by 15% by 2019 according to the same research agency.
H.E. Ms. Lina Annab, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in her speech spoke about Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) current promotional activities in Mexico, as well as plans for further promotion. “The JTB is very active in the Mexican market through the JTB North American Office. There is a dedicated website in Spanish targeting the Mexican market”. While Mexican outbound tourists come to Jordan in small numbers it is actually on the rise. The number of overnight tourists has increased by 18% between 2011 and 2015 and the overnight stays increased by 17% in Jordan based on the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA’s) numbers, Her Excellency stated.
In his turn, Ambassador Enrique Rojo Stein shared with the attendees his personal experience in Jordan, as a tourist and as a resident. He confirmed his strong belief in that Jordan has a lot to offer Mexican and any other tourists through the diversity of Jordan's natural and historic products, as well as the incredible hospitality of its people. The ambassador also spoke of the Mexican experience in developing tourism destinations that can be used as an example in Jordan for developing certain cities like Jerash, Madaba, Kerak among others.
The event was held at the newly opened Rotana Amman, and sponsored by Corona and Jose Cuervo both products imported by Yousef M. Haddad & Partners Co. and the following JITOA members: Karma House DMC, Zaatarah Travel & Tourism, Tyche Tours.
